What is EVOH Barrier Packaging?

EVOH (Ethylene Vinyl Alcohol) packaging uses a specialized plastic layer to create an "invisible shield" against oxygen. This keeps food fresh, prevents spoilage, and maintains crunchiness for months.
Why It Works:
  • Molecular Magic: EVOH combines easy processing with dense polymer chains that block gas.

  • Unmatched Power: A 1 mm layer of EVOH equals the oxygen barrier of a 10-meter thick wall of standard plastic (LDPE).

MaterialOxygen Barrier (Relative)Key Trait
EVOH⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (Highest)Best barrier, moisture-sensitive
PVDC10x LowerGood barrier, hard to recycle
Nylon (PA)~100x LowerStrong, moderate barrier
PP / PE10,000x LowerGreat moisture seal, poor oxygen barrier

🧱 The "Sandwich" Structure

EVOH is rarely used alone. It sits as a hidden middle layer in a multi-layer film (co-extrusion):
  1. Outer Layers (PE/PP): Protect EVOH from moisture (which weakens it) and provide strength/sealability.

  2. Inner Layer (EVOH): Blocks oxygen and locks in aroma.

🛡️ Common Applications

  • Food: Meat, cheese, coffee, sauces, baby food (preserves taste & vitamins).

  • Non-Food: Pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, agricultural chemicals.

  • Industrial: Car fuel tanks (stops vapor escape), heating pipes (prevents corrosion).

♻️ The Sustainability Challenge

The Problem: EVOH's tight bond with other plastics makes recycling difficult. Even small amounts can contaminate recycled batches, making them brittle.

The Solutions:
  • Mono-materials: Developing single-plastic high-barrier films.

  • Low Content: Keeping EVOH under 5% to meet recyclability guidelines (e.g., RecyClass).

  • New Tech: Using barrier coatings on mono-materials instead of layers.
